What is Pushover and how do I use it?
In short, Pushover is a service to receive instant push notifications on your phone or tablet from a variety of sources. To quickly get started:
- Install our client app on your iPhone/iPad or Android device, or register your Desktop browser.
- Launch the client and it will walk you through creating a Pushover account and registering your device with our servers.
- You'll get a new User Key e-mailed to you (which you can always find on your dashboard or through the Settings menu of the Pushover client app on your device). Your User Key is a randomly generated identifier which allows

Not receiving notifications for Pushover messages or device marked "offline"
For iPhone/iPad and Android devices, Pushover sends push notifications through Apple's and Google's servers and we rely on their systems and frameworks to deliver messages to your device. If the connection between your device and Apple's or Google's servers is not working properly, you will not receive push notifications, but once you open the Pushover device client, it will synchronize directly with our servers and download all pending messages.
To get push notifications working, you can try each of these steps until your device is receiving push notifications:
Check Common Settings
Verify the Device Is Enabled

Using Pushover for Desktop
Pushover for Desktop is an in-browser app. There is nothing to download or install and it works on Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, and other Unix flavors. By having your web browser running and a tab open to our Desktop client app website, your browser will be in constant communication with our servers and generate notifications just like your mobile devices.
While this does mean that you have to keep your web browser open to receive notifications, most users have a web browser open all the time anyway.
Tip: In Chrome and Firefox, you can right-click

E-mailing notifications to your devices
Pushover includes an e-mail gateway feature that allows you to send e-mails to a custom Pushover e-mail address and have them be converted into Pushover notifications. Every user has a unique @pomail.net address assigned when their account is created, and additional addresses can be created with custom options.
You can find your default Pushover e-mail address on your dashboard, as well as create additional ones or delete aliases at any time.
E-Mail Alias Settings
Each e-mail alias can have its own settings such as a unique sound, priority level, and delivery options.

How to get a Pushover API or Pushover Application Token
Each application, service, or utility that sends notifications through Pushover's API needs to have its own API token which uniquely identifies all of the API requests that it makes. A single API token can be used to send to multiple Pushover User Keys.
API tokens are free and can be registered through our website.
Please note that while API tokens can be used to send to multiple users, any API tokens you register should be protected and not disclosed to any other users or given to any 3rd party services.

Overriding Do Not Disturb on Android
On newer versions of Android, it may be necessary to allow the Pushover application to override the system's Do Not Disturb settings to allow notifications to play sound.
Start by swiping down from the top of the screen and tap-and-hold on Do Not Disturb.
At the Do Not Disturb screen, tap on Apps
Next, tap Add apps
Then select Pushover from the list
Finally, tap Allow all notifications and ensure that all options are enabled. If you use new alert sounds in the future that are not bypassing Do Not Disturb, it may be required to do these steps again

Limitations on devices per account
Your Pushover account is permitted to have ten (10) devices registered to it that you own and/or primarily operate. Each device that is owned or primarily operated by a different person needs to be on its own Pushover account with its own license (though we'll look the other way if you share an account with your partner/spouse/kids/parents/pets).
When setting up Pushover on kiosk-type devices that are not operated by particular individuals, please create at least one Pushover account per site/store. These accounts are still limited to 10 devices per account.

How much does Pushover cost? Is there a subscription?
Short answer For individuals, after a 30-day free trial, it costs $4.99 USD once, per-platform (iPhone/iPad, Android, Desktop), to use on all of your own devices1 on that platform as you want. There are no monthly or yearly fees and you can receive as many notifications as you can handle. Long answer As an end-user receiving push notifications, our iPhone, iPad, Android, and Desktop clients are free to try for 30 days. After 30 days, you'll need to purchase a $4.99 USD license for each platform you wish to use it on. Once you've licensed a particular platform, you can

Not receiving Pushover notifications from 3rd party software/services
An ever-increasing number of applications, websites, libraries, and packages have integrated Pushover support to make your Pushover service more useful. As almost all of these are created and maintained by individuals and companies not associated with our company, we are unable to provide support for them when they do not work as intended, such as when you do not receive Pushover notifications from them.
Testing if the problem is with Pushover or the 3rd party app
From your dashboard (requires that you are logged into our website), enter a test message into the "Push Notification" area and click "Send Notification".
-
Times shown on notifications from the E-Mail Gateway are incorrect
When Pushover's e-mail gateways receive an e-mail, there is already a date and time included in its headers which is put there by the sender when the e-mail was created. Since each e-mail may be received out of order, or may be delayed before reaching our e-mail gateway, we preserve this date and time and use it as the timestamp on the notification so that they are ordered in your Pushover application in the same order that they were created, rather than the order that we received them.
While most of the time this feature works well, some systems may

Example code and Pushover libraries
Pushover's API is designed to be easy to use without the overhead of complicated authentication mechanisms like OAuth. For full details on our API endpoints, see our API Documentation.
To quickly get started sending Pushover messages with a wide variety of programming languages, we have some sample code as well as a number of 3rd party libraries written and maintained by Pushover users.
In all of these examples, replace USER_KEY with your Pushover User Key (which can be found on your dashboard) or that of the user/group to which you are sending, and API_TOKEN with your application's API Token. If

How to delete/cancel your Pushover account
Before proceeding, please note that for most users, Pushover has no recurring subscription fee. To use it after the free 30-day trial, a one-time in-app purchase is all that is needed to continue receiving notifications for life.
Also note that we do not automatically bill you after your trial. Prior to your 30-day trial expiring, you will receive a Pushover notification that your trial is about to end, with instructions on how to make an in-app purchase. After the 30-day trial, if you do not make an in-app purchase for a license, you will no longer receive new Pushover notifications,

Google Play reports "This app is no longer compatible with your device" or "Your device isn't compatible with this version"
Some users have reported that when attempting to install the Pushover Android application from Google Play, they receive an error that the app is not compatible with their device, despite the application having been previously installed, or when installing on a mainstream Android device. Pushover for Android is compatible with all Android devices running 6 or higher, as long as the device has a working version of Google Play Services.
This error can sometimes be resolved by clearing the local data stored in the Google Play application. Open the main Settings app on the device, then tap on Applications, find

Re-registering macOS for notifications after a system update
On macOS, you may need to re-register your desktop to continue receiving notifications after a system update or a reset of settings in Safari.
To start, open Safari, then its Preferences. Click the Notifications tab, and if there is an entry for Pushover, click on it and then click the Remove button. Close Safari, and then open it again and visit the Pushover dashboard and click the Login link next to your macOS device. Unable to make an in-app purchase / buying a license other ways
If you are unable to make an in-app purchase through Google Play or the App Store, visit the Licensing page on our website to purchase licenses with a credit card or PayPal.
Please note that our Android app still requires continuous access to the Google Services Framework on your device in order to receive notifications, and Google Play is needed to receive timely updates to our app. If your device cannot make an in-app purchase because Google Play Services does not work on the device, you will still not be able to use Pushover even after purchasing a license.

Sending messages to another Pushover user
Pushover messages are delivered to your devices by supplying your Pushover User Key to any Apps and Services that support Pushover. To send messages to an additional user's devices at the same time, you can create a Delivery Group and add each user to the group, and then supply that new Group Key to those Apps and Services instead of your own User Key.
Note: for companies and organizations that require centralized management of multiple accounts, please see our Pushover for Teams service which greatly simplifies sending messages to multiple users.

Not hearing notification sounds on Apple Watch
The Apple Watch does not play notification sounds for any applications, regardless of the Silent Mode setting. It will only ever play sounds for alarms. This is not something we are able to override in our application.
For notifications to appear on your Watch, the Watch needs to be secure on your wrist, unlocked, and your phone needs to have its screen off. When in this mode, if you have Notification Mirroring enabled for the Pushover app inside the Watch app, the notification will appear on your wrist with no sound, but will vibrate if you have that enabled.
